Basic Lay Formation & Certification

OUR GOALS

  1. Provide a solid and complete introduction to the Catholic Faith to the laity
  2. Provide foundational elements of spiritual development and ministerial identity building for the laity
  3. Provide the coursework required for Basic Catechist/Lay Ministry Certification
  4. Provide the coursework required for Renewal of Certification

Basic Certification: Live classes are offered in English and Spanish at the Diocesan Formation Centers.

Ongoing Formation: 

  1. Certified lay people are encouraged to continuously grow in their faith by pursuing the Renewal of their Basic Certificate.
  2. Renewal requirements include 40 hours of certified formation over 4 years:
    1. 5 hours in Church History
    2. 5 hours in Scripture
    3. 20 hours in any other topic
    4. 10 hours of spiritual development
    5. Submit the Renewal Form

  • Certified lay people are also encouraged to participate in other diocesan formation events, such as  Ministry Days and the Catholic Speaker Series (which provide renewal hours). ​​​​​​​

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

For Those Wishing to Earn a Basic Certificate:

Once you have completed  either the Basic Catholic Formation Courses or the STEP Online course you will become eligible to earn either the Basic Minister Certificate or the Basic Catechist Certificate.  WHAT IS IT?
The BASIC CERTIFICATION consists of a comprehensive program from the Diocese of Sacramento for all catechists, Catholic school teachers and lay ministers who would like to obtain a basic level of formation to prepare themselves for their ministry. All catechists from the Diocese of Sacramento are required to obtain their Basic Certification.  The program is also open to all the faithful who would like to learn more about their Catholic faith. 


THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF:

Course of Studies to Obtain a Basic Catechist Certificate
This course of studies is consistent with the General Directory for Catechesis, National Directory for Catechesis and carefully follows the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Spiritual Development of the Catechist/Lay Minister
The Spiritual Development Component is completed through participation in an activity from two or more of the following categories:

  • Full-day or weekend Retreat
  • Ministry Days or another Region XI Diocesan Conference
  • Full-day Justice/Service Project
  • Ongoing Spiritual Direction
  • Ongoing Faith Sharing Group

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento highly encourages all ministers, catechists and catholic school teachers to earn their basic certification.


BASIC MINISTER CERTIFICATION

The Basic Minister Certificate applies to those participating as a minister in a parish. This covers all parish ministers who are not involved in catechism classes or in teaching roles.

To earn your Basic Minister Certification, you will need to complete the following:

  1. Satisfactory completion of the Basic Catholic Formation Courses
  2. Spiritual Development of the Lay Minister - The Spiritual Development Component is completed through participation in an activity from two or more of the following categories:
  • Full-day or weekend Retreat
  • Ministry Days or another Region XI Diocesan Conference
  • Full-day Justice/Service Project
  • Ongoing Spiritual Direction
  • Ongoing Faith Sharing Group
  1. Submission of her/his Application for Certification

BASIC CATECHIST CERTIFICATION

To earn your Basic Catechist Certification, you will need to complete the following:

  1. Satisfactory completion of the Basic Catholic Formation Courses
  2. Spiritual Development of the Lay Minister - The Spiritual Development Component is completed through participation in an activity from two or more of the following categories:
  • Full-day or weekend Retreat
  • Ministry Days or another Region XI Diocesan Conference
  • Full-day Justice/Service Project
  • Ongoing Spiritual Direction
  • Ongoing Faith Sharing Group
  1. One year of catechetical experience
  2. Evaluation of performance (this includes an observation and evaluation of at least one catechetical session)
  3. Submission of her/his Application for Certification

Note: All dioceses in California recognize the validity of the Basic Catechist Certification.
