All the followers of Jesus had scattered upon the Lord’s arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. Only his Mother Mary, other women, and the beloved disciple stood by Jesus as he suffered the torturous death on the cross at Calvary. Their hopes hung nailed to a cross. Any deliverance seemed doomed. The callous taunts of the crowd swirled around them, “If you are the Messiah, save yourself.”

No one could grasp at that moment the magnitude of mercy that flowed from the multiple wounds of Christ’s body. By his wounds we are healed. It was the moment of glory, memorialized by the crucifix hanging in all our churches and many of our homes, reminding us that what is foolish for others is for us the wisdom and power of God.

May the wisdom and power of Christ, crucified and risen from the dead, stir up hope and renew our joy during this Easter Triduum. In the midst of all our trials and tribulations may we recognize the magnitude of mercy the Good Shepherd, Jesus, gives us. A blessed Triduum and a happy Easter to all.

La cruz de Cristo todavía confunde a muchos especialmente durante la pandemia. El escenario sangriento del Calvario les parece un fracaso vergonzoso. Para los creyentes, es la gloria de Dios, la sabiduría de Dios.

Acerquémonos, entonces, a Cristo crucificado para hallar en sus llagas dolorosas el justo remedio alentador. El buen pastor nos alimenta y nos encamina desde la cruz hacia la esperanza de su gloriosa resurrección. Nos sentimos dispersados y agobiados por las pruebas y tribulaciones de la pandemia.

En este momento de nuestro Calvario el Cristo misericordioso nos alcanza para acoger nuestras manos en sus manos tiernas y nos levantará. Jesús pondrá sus ojos compasivos en nosotros. Nos animará de nuevo con el saludo pascual. No tengan miedo. La paz esté con ustedes. Mi paz les doy. Yo soy la resurrección y la vida.
