January-February issue of Catholic Herald magazine is published, with the theme of Catholic education

The January-Februrary issue of Catholic Herald magazine has been published. The theme for the feature stories in this issue is Catholic education. The digital edition of the magazine is available at http://faithdigital.org/Sacramento/SAC0119/

In the cover story, we meet Amber Kelley, seventh grader at St. Joseph School in Redding, and Alana Yuzon, eighth grader at Our Lady of Grace School in West Sacramento, just two of several thousand students in the 36 elementary schools of the Diocese of Sacramento who are experiencing "Disciple of Christ -- Education in Virtue," an interactive program and curriculum structured on the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas regarding the virtues and gifts of the Holy Spirit. The much-used and highly successful program from the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, is being implemented in all schools over the next two years. In the school setting, the call to discipleship is extended not only to students, but to administration, faculty, staff and parents. It is the fruit of a personal encounter with Christ, which affects a person's intellectual, spiritual, physical and social life.

Other stories in this issue include a feature on "when faith and sports converge," with interviews with Jill Bennett and Rich Romo, detailing how the Parochial Athletic League in Catholic elementary schools is forming good athletes and even better people; a feature on how Catholic school choirs lift voices and spirits with music, with interviews with Janet Stites, longtime choir director at St. Francis of Assisi School in Sacramento, and Kathy Curtis, longtime choir director at St. John Notre Dame School in Folsom; and a feature on how the Annual Catholic Appeal helps youth on the journey to adulthood.

Bishop Jaime Soto is the publisher of Catholic Herald magazine, which is published six times each year and includes moving faith stories and high-quality photography about Catholics in the diocese, as well as news and events of the local church.
