The January-February 2021 issue of Catholic Herald magazine has been published. The theme for this issue is "Hope through Catholic education." The digital edition of the magazine is available at https://www.scd.org/catholic-herald-magazine.

In the cover story of this issue, Cybil Hilario Ignacio, a 1995 alumna of St. Patrick-St. Vincent (SPSV) High School in Vallejo, shares how her thoughts of family and community merge, as well as the joyful weaving together of a few generations, whenever she thinks of the SPSV community. She and her husband, Alfred, and their two children, Alfred Jr. and Ysabel, her two sisters and their children, and more members of her family have all attended the high school. The year 2020 marked 150 years of Catholic education in Solano County.

Other feature stories in this issue include Bishop Jaime Soto's column on: "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" may be one of the blessings from this unforeseen penitential plague; how James Walker, fifth grade teacher at St. John Vianney School in Rancho Cordova, masters his role in dual learning; Lincoln Snyder, executive director of Catholic schools for the diocese, addresses the question of "Catholic schools: Where do we go from here?"; Erin and Shawn Alexander of Colfax share their journey to St. Joseph School in Auburn, which also opened a door to the church; how two Catholic schools. Mount St. Mary's Academy in Grass Valley and Holy Trinity School in El Dorado Hills, embraced uncertainty and rebuilt operational vitality; and Father Alfredo Tamayo, as he retires, reflects on four decades of priestly ministry.

In the Last Word column, Msgr. James Murphy reflects on "Take it from a retiree: you never stop learning."

Bishop Jaime Soto is the publisher of Catholic Herald magazine, which is published six times each year and includes moving faith stories about Catholics in the diocese, as well as news and events of the local church. Individual faith stories are the cornerstone of the magazine and columns also explore the Catholic faith and education about church teachings.
