Funeral Mass for Father Troy D. Powers is Friday, Nov. 3

Bishop Jaime Soto will preside at a funeral Mass for Father Troy D. Powers on Friday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, located at 1017 11th St. in Sacramento. Father Powers, who served as a priest of the diocese for 30 years, died on Oct. 28. He was 60.

Bishop Myron J. Cotta will preside at a vigil service on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in Sacred Heart Church, located at 1040 39th St. in Sacramento. Viewing will begin at 5 p.m. with praying of the rosary at 6:30 p.m.

A reception will follow the funeral Mass in the Cathedral’s Mercy Hall. Burial will follow the reception at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at 6509 Fruitridge Road in Sacramento.

A native of Sacramento, Father Powers received a bachelor’s degree in political science and government with a minor in history from California State University, Sacramento. He completed studies for the priesthood at St. Kieran’s Seminary in Kilkenny, Ireland and St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 2, 1987 by Bishop Francis A. Quinn.

He was associate pastor of Holy Family Parish in Citrus Heights, St. John the Baptist Parish in Folsom and Holy Rosary Parish in Woodland. He served as pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Yreka (1993-94), St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Oroville (1994-2000), Holy Family Parish in Citrus Heights (2000-2004) and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Sacramento (2010-12). He also served as parochial vicar of St. Philomene, St. Rose and Presentation parishes in Sacramento at various times from 2004 to 2008.

Father Powers battled a number of physical challenges during his life and received a kidney transplant from a living donor at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona in 2009.

He was preceded in death by his father, Troy Doil Powers, his mother, Josephine Virginia Powers, and his brother, Harry Feusi. He is survived by his brothers, Jerry Feusi and Thomas Powers, and his sisters, Alice White and Alene Powers, and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
