In the gospel according to Luke, the shepherds were living in the fields, keeping the night watch over their flocks. They huddled against the cold night with only the silent stars twinkling above and soft murmuring of sheep for company. Their outcast circumstance became the occasion of good favor. To them came the vision of the celestial chorus and their sweet angelic song, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” To those unfortunate ones came the fortunate news of salvation.
During this time when many of our sacred rituals have moved outdoors or online to guard against the spread of the pandemic, let us place ourselves in the company of those shepherds. We keep a protective vigil over our families and friends. Keep watch as well for the heavenly hosts whose song still echoes through the ages. Even with our worries and tribulations, let us join our voices to theirs, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

En el evangelio según Lucas, los pastores vivían en los campos, vigilando de noche a sus rebaños. En la fría noche, se acurrucaron con solo las estrellas silenciosas brillando arriba y el suave murmullo de las ovejas como compañía. Su circunstancia de alejamiento se convirtió en ocasión favorable. Mantengamos una vigilia protectora sobre nuestras familias y amigos. Vigilen también por las guardias celestiales cuyo canto aún resuena a través de los siglos. A pesar de nuestras preocupaciones y tribulaciones, unamos nuestras voces a las de ellos, "Gloria a Dios en las alturas y en la tierra paz a todos los que gozan de su favor."
