The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has chosen one of the priests of Sacramento for the office of bishop to serve the vibrant and diverse people of God in Northern California. I am grateful to His Holiness and honored to have my brother, Bishop-elect Rey Bersabal, as a co-worker for the Episcopal ministry in this favored part of the Lord’s vineyard.
Bishop-elect Rey came as an immigrant priest bringing the rich cultural heritage of the Filipino people. He became part of a presbyterate and people that is a global Catholic kaleidoscope of faith and charity radiating the historic credal customs from Portugal, Italy, Ireland, China, Poland, Africa and more. Bishop-elect Rey has learned a lot and given much during his 25 years as a priest in Sacramento. He has demonstrated an ability to shepherd, listening first in order to lead. In his various assignments at Folsom, Davis, and now Sacramento he has gleaned much and sown plenty. He is noted as a joyful pastor whose cheerful manner brings others to communion with Christ, the chief shepherd of our souls.
The years of pastoral experience working in the parishes of the geographical and demographically large Diocese of Sacramento will be one of the strengths he brings to his new ministry. His understanding of Catholic faith and mercy springs from lived experiences of families striving to follow the Lord Jesus in our turbulent times.
Bishop-elect Rey loves his brother priests and is loved by them. This too, contributes to his new ministry as the Catholic community seeks to live the Holy Communion we receive in the Most Blessed Sacrament of Christ. The fraternal bonds between bishops, priests, and deacons should always serve the communion of all the faithful with the one heart and mind of Christ Jesus.
I am grateful to Bishop-elect Rey for saying “yes” to the Holy Father’s invitation to the college of bishops. I ask all the clergy and faithful of the Diocese to join me in praying for our brother, Bishop-elect Rey Bersabal so that he may always walk first as a faithful disciple of the Lord Jesus and be coworker and companion cultivating the verdant Sacramento Valley for a lasting harvest of mercy and joy.
Together, we look to our Blessed Mother, Santa María de Guadalupe, so that her sweet maternal gaze may assist Bishop-elect Rey grow in the mercy and holiness of her beloved Son, Jesus.

El Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, ha elegido a uno de los presbíteros de Sacramento por el oficio del obispo para servir al dinámico y diverso pueblo de Dios en el norte de California. Estoy agradecido a Su Santidad. Es un honor tener a mi hermano, el Obispo-electo Rey Bersabal, como colaborador del ministerio episcopal en esta dichosa parte de la viña del Señor.
El Obispo-electo Rey llegó como un sacerdote inmigrante trayendo con él la gran herencia cultural del pueblo filipino. Se integró como miembro del presbiterado y el pueblo que son un caleidoscopio católico global de fe y caridad irradiando las históricas costumbres religiosas de Portugal, Italia, Irlanda, China, Polonia, África y más. El Obispo-electo Rey ha aprendido mucho y también ha dado mucho durante sus 25 años como sacerdote en Sacramento. Ha demostrado capacidad para ser un buen pastor, primero escuchar para mejor después pastorear. En sus diversas asignaciones en Folsom, Davis y ahora Sacramento, ha cosechado y sembrado mucho. Se le conoce como un pastor jovial, cuya actitud alegre lleva a otros a la comunión con Cristo, el pastor principal de nuestras almas.
Los años de experiencia pastoral trabajando en las parroquias de la Diócesis de Sacramento, geográfica y demográficamente grande, serán una de las fortalezas que aportará a su nuevo ministerio. Su comprensión de la fe y la misericordia católicas surge de las experiencias vividas por familias que se esfuerzan por seguir al Señor Jesús en estos tiempos turbulentos.
El Obispo-electo Rey ama a sus hermanos sacerdotes y a la vez él es amado por ellos. Esto también contribuye a su nuevo ministerio a la vez que la comunidad católica busca vivir la Sagrada Comunión que recibimos en el Santísimo Sacramento de Cristo. Los lazos fraternos entre obispos, presbíteros y diáconos deben servir siempre a la comunión entre todos los fieles con el único corazón y mente de Cristo Jesús.
Agradezco al Obispo-electo Rey por decir “sí” a la invitación del Santo Padre para incorporarse al colegio episcopal. Pido a todo el clero y fieles de la Diócesis que se unan a mí rogando por nuestro hermano, Obispo-electo Rey Bersabal, para que siempre camine primero como fiel discípulo del Señor Jesús y sea un compañero y colaborador suyo cultivando el valle verde de Sacramento para alcanzar una cosecha perdurable de misericordia y gozo.
Juntos, fijemos nuestros ojos a la Santísima Madre, Santa María de Guadalupe, para que su dulce mirada maternal ayude al Obispo-electo Rey a crecer en la misericordia y santidad de su amado Hijo, Jesús.
