“Speaking the Truth in Love” Series

“What does it mean to be black and Catholic? It means that I come to my church fully functioning...I bring myself, my black self, all that I am, all that I have, all that I’m worth, all I hope to become. I bring my whole history, my traditions, my experience,my culture, my African-American song and dance and gesture and movement and teaching and preaching and healing and responsibility as a gift to the Church.” Servant of God, Sister Thea Bowman

Under the BCM of the Diocese of Sacramento, the Sister Thea Bowman Group at St. Basil the Great Church in Vallejo was formed in order to share our black Catholic identity, culture, spirituality, song, dance and gesture with all who would like to learn about black contributions to the Church. Like Sister Thea, “we bring to America the sweet memory of Africa.” The “Speaking the Truth in Love” series is designed to teach everyone about the contributions, beauty, and richness of influential black Catholics.

Beginning Sunday, September 20, 2020 at 2:00 PM and continuing every 3rd Sunday of the month, we will discuss the life of a black Catholic notable and what it means to be black and Catholic.
