Bishop Jaime Soto and Auxiliary Bishop Myron J. Cotta will preside at Ash Wednesday Masses and outdoor services on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14 to begin the season of Lent, which is marked by prayer, fasting and almsgiving. All liturgies will include the blessing and distribution of ashes.
Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics. At Mass on Ash Wednesday, the imposition of ashes replicates an ancient penitential practice and symbolizes the faithful’s dependence upon God’s mercy and forgiveness.
Bishop Jaime Soto will preside at an 8:30 a.m. Liturgy of the Word with distribution of ashes on the West Steps of the state Capitol in downtown Sacramento. He will also preside at 12:10 Mass in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, located at 1017 11th St. Later in the day at 5 p.m., he will preside at Mass with students from UC Davis on campus (see more information at http://www.davisnewman.org.)
Auxiliary Bishop Myron J. Cotta will visit and distribute ashes at Loaves and Fishes charity in Sacramento at 10 a.m. on Ash Wednesday. He will also preside at Mass for students at California State University, Sacramento, on campus at noon on Ash Wednesday (see more information at http:www.sacnewman.org). He will also preside outside the John E. Moss Federal Building at 650 Capitol Ave. (corner of 7th and Capitol) at a 5 p.m. outdoor service.
