(Sacramento, CA) - The California Catholic Conference announced today that it is vehemently opposed to SB 1196, the proposed bill that would expand the definitions for eligibility and eliminate residency requirements for those seeking suicide options from their physicians.

“SB 1196 eliminates all of the potential ‘safeguards’ that were originally put into place when the End of Life Option Act was initially approved,” said CCC Executive Director Kathleen Domingo. “We’ve already seen that the state has not lived up to its promise to record data for those utilizing this terminal method. Now, this new bill will expand the definition of those who qualify for aid-in-dying drugs to include those without a terminal prognosis and those with psychological suffering.”

Dear Friends in Christ:

Last December I shared with you my decision to file a Chapter 11 petition with the United States Bankruptcy Court on behalf of the administrative offices of the Diocese of Sacramento. I will file that petition on Monday, April 1, 2024.

As I shared in the December announcement, the bankruptcy process is the only respectful, and equitable way to address the substantial number of claims by those who have been abused by clergy and other Church Workers. Bankruptcy is a lengthy process, but it provides supervision and transparency for all the parties involved so that an equitable resolution is offered to the victim-survivors of abuse. The court-supervised reorganization will also allow me to sustain the sanctifying, teaching, and charitable work of the Catholic community in Northern California.

With the theme, “Real Presence, Real Life,” some 2,000 of the faithful from across the Diocese of Sacramento joined in the Diocesan Eucharistic Congress on March 9 in Sacramento. The event was part of the Eucharistic Revival currently taking place in the diocese and across the United States.

Participants attended one of three simultaneous afternoon gatherings held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, and a youth event at Immaculate Conception Parish hosted by the Black Catholic Ministry. The events culminated with the celebration of Mass at each church, followed by three eucharistic processions with the Lord Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of downtown, merging at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament for eucharistic adoration in the evening.
