Catholic Schools Week celebrated in elementary schools in diocese Jan. 28-Feb. 3

The nationwide celebration of Catholic Schools Week (CSW) takes place January 28 to February 3. This annual event highlights the unique and invaluable contributions of Catholic schools to education and community development.

Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Sacramento will be hosting activities throughout this week, including many holding open house events on Sunday, Jan. 28.

CSW is a time to recognize and celebrate the exceptional role that Catholic schools play in providing quality education, fostering spiritual growth and promoting community engagement. This year's theme, "Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community," underscores the distinctive mission of Catholic schools in nurturing students academically and spiritually.

Lincoln Snyder, president and CEO of the National Catholic Educational Association, observes: “I’ve experienced Catholic school education as a student, teacher, board member, superintendent and now at NCEA. Every year, I’m joyfully reminded that Catholic Schools Week is a jubilant celebration and joyous recognition of the transformative power that education rooted in Catholic values holds, shaping not just students, but servant leaders and faith-filled communities.”

Here’s a glimpse of what Catholic schools will be celebrating:

  1. Academic Excellence: Catholic schools are known for their commitment to academic excellence. They provide a rigorous and well-rounded education that prepares students for success in higher education and beyond.
  2. Faith Formation: Beyond academics, Catholic schools prioritize faith formation and take seriously the task of creating saints. They offer a faith-based education and instill moral and ethical principles to guide Catholic school students throughout their lives.
  3. Community Engagement: Catholic schools actively engage with their communities, fostering a sense of belonging and duty. Students participate in service projects, promoting social responsibility and empathy.
  4. Inclusive Environment: Catholic schools welcome students from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. They prioritize the development of each student's unique talents and abilities.
  5. Parental Involvement: The Catholic Church’s clear teaching emphasizes that parents are the first educators of their children. Together, Catholic schools and parents share the responsibility of educating students.
  6. Leadership Development: Catholic schools purposefully intend to develop leaders with a strong sense of moral responsibility. They encourage students to become active contributors to society and compassionate servant leaders in their communities.

Many events and activities at schools in the Diocese of Sacramento are planned around the daily themes of this special week. It's an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Catholic education and to openly appreciate the dedicated educators, students and parents who contribute to the success of Catholic schools.
